On This Day in American History

On March 1, 1961, the Peace Corps is established by President John F. Kennedy. The idea behind the Peace Corps was to send trained Americans to developing countries to provide social and economic assistance. The idea was well received, and within a week of its creation, thousands of letters of inquiry poured into Washington. To date, over 230,000 Americans have volunteered with the Peace Corps in over 140 countries.
